A significant legal change awaits all dog owners in Spain. Until now, there was an insurance requirement only for dog breeds classified as dangerous, known as “PPP” (perros potencialmente peligrosos = “potentially dangerous dogs”). However, a new regulation brings an important change.
According to a new regulation, all dog owners in Spain must now take out liability insurance for their dogs, regardless of breed. This is a significant change that affects dog owners across the country.
Reviewing Existing Insurance Policies
It is important to note that many home insurance policies in Spain already include complementary liability coverage for pets. Dog owners should urgently review their insurance policy to determine whether dog liability is already included. This may mean that no additional insurance needs to be taken out.
Requirements for Registration in the Existing Home Insurance Policy
According to the new law, dogs in Spain must now be registered with a chip number, breed, and name, which was not previously required. This aims to facilitate the identification of the animals and keep the insurance companies better informed.
Costs of Registration
The costs for registration in the existing home insurance policy can vary. Some insurance companies offer this addendum free of charge, while others may charge additional premiums. It is advisable to contact your insurance company or insurance broker directly to clarify the exact terms.
Separate Liability Insurance for Dogs
For those who do not have complementary liability coverage in their existing insurance policy, there are also separate liability insurances for dogs.
These usually start at around 50 euros per year. For owners of dogs classified as dangerous (PPP breeds), the premiums generally start at 80 euros per year.
Coverage of the Liability Insurance
The liability insurance for dogs covers damages the dog causes to third parties. It is important to note, however, that it does not cover damage to one’s own body, own belongings, or the family of the dog owner. It also does not cover the animal’s illnesses or accidents. A separate pet health insurance is required for this.
Minimum Coverage Amount
The minimum coverage amount for the liability insurance has not yet been determined. In the past, coverage amounts usually ranged between EUR 120,000 and EUR 300,000. It is important to be informed about the coverage amounts and conditions when selecting insurance.
Monitoring of Insurance
It is currently unclear whether the police will monitor compliance with the insurance requirement. However, owners of dogs classified as dangerous (PPP owners) are regularly checked to ensure they comply with applicable laws.
