The Benefits of Car Insurance in Spain

A car insurance in Spain offers legally mandated liability protection, flexible additional coverages such as comprehensive and theft insurance, and prompt assistance in case of damage, often with 24/7 service – ideal for foreigners in Spain too.

Mandatory Protection and Legal Compliance

Liability insurance is legally required and protects against financial consequences due to damages inflicted on others. Without this coverage, high fines or the immobilization of the vehicle are likely.

Individual Protection through Additional Insurances

Spanish insurers offer flexible packages like partial or full comprehensive, theft, or accident insurance. You can adapt your policy to your personal needs.

Support in Case of Claims

Many insurers in Spain offer quick assistance in accidents, such as 24/7 breakdown service and claims settlement, often in your language – especially beneficial for foreigners in Spain.

Important Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions About Car Insurance:

WHAT does the car liability insurance cover in Mallorca and Spain?

The car liability insurance in Spain not only provides you with legally required protection but also a sense of security that you are not alone in difficult moments.

  1. Bodily injuries: If you are involved in an accident and someone is injured, your liability insurance covers medical expenses, hospital bills, or necessary rehabilitation measures. This way, you don’t have to worry about financial burdens during an already stressful time.
  2. Property damage: Whether it’s about the damaged car of another driver or damages to someone else’s property – the insurance kicks in and covers costs for repairs or replacements so that you don’t have to pay out of your own pocket.
  3. Legal support: Should legal issues or disputes arise, the insurance assists you and covers attorney and court costs. Thus, you are also legally protected and can rely on professional support.
  1. Fire: If your car is damaged or destroyed by fire – whether from an engine fire or an external incident such as vandalism – the partial coverage covers the damage costs. Especially in parts of Spain prone to hot summers and occasional fires, this is an essential protection.
  2. Theft: If your vehicle is stolen, the partial coverage in Spain helps compensate for the loss. This protection is particularly reassuring in tourist areas where the risk of car theft may be higher.
  3. Natural disasters: Spain can experience extreme weather conditions like hail, floods, or storms. In Spanish partial coverage, these natural hazards are typically covered, which is a major advantage.
  4. Vandalism: A scratched paint job or broken windows due to vandalism? Partial coverage protects you from the costs of such damages. This is an important aspect, especially in larger cities or tourist regions.
  1. Accident damages to one’s own vehicle: No matter whether it’s a self-caused accident or hit-and-run by the other party – the comprehensive insurance in Spain covers damages to your own vehicle, including repair costs or replacement in the event of a total loss.
  2. Theft and vandalism: If your car is stolen or damaged, whether by burglary, theft, or deliberate vandalism, the insurance kicks in. Especially in urban areas or tourist hotspots in Spain, this can be a crucial protection.
  3. Damage from natural events: The Spanish comprehensive coverage also includes damage from extreme weather conditions, such as floods, landslides, hail, or storms, which occur more frequently in certain regions of Spain (such as the coast or mountain regions). This coverage is often already included in the standard contract, which is often only offered as an additional option in Central Europe.
  4. Fire and explosion: If your vehicle is damaged by fire or explosions, the insurance covers the costs for repair or replacement. This is important especially in the hotter and drier regions of Spain, where fires are more common.
  5. Glass damage: Damage to windows, such as stone chips or cracks in the windshield, is also covered. This coverage is included as standard in many Spanish comprehensive policies.
  6. Damage caused by animals: If there’s an accident with an animal – whether on country roads or in rural areas – the damages to your vehicle are also covered.
  7. Optional deductible: In Spain, you can often choose between various models, with or without a deductible (franquicia). A higher deductible lowers the monthly costs, while comprehensive insurance without a deductible is more expensive but offers the best protection.

In most countries, the damage of the injured party is covered by the insurer of the party at fault. In Spain, this is regulated differently. The so-called “Convenio” is a framework agreement of all car insurers licensed in Spain and stipulates that the injured party is compensated by their own insurance.

In Spain, towing a vehicle yourself is generally not allowed, and there are some good reasons for this, relating to both safety and traffic regulations.

Unlike in some countries, where you can simply grab a towing rope and pull a friend’s car to the nearest workshop, Spain is more strict about this. Self-towing is considered too risky. The highway code states that vehicle towing can only be carried out by authorized towing services.

Why? One of the main reasons is safety. Amateur towing poses the risk that the towing equipment is not properly secured or that the towed vehicle is not adequately secured. Abrupt braking or a sharp turn could result in an accident, especially on Spain’s often narrow and winding roads. Moreover, professional towing vehicles have specialized equipment to transport the vehicle safely – something that can be easily lacking in a DIY action.

Another aspect is the traffic regulations. Traffic in Spain, especially within cities, can be hectic and chaotic. Self-towing could bring additional risks here and severely disrupt the traffic flow. Also, the risk of misunderstandings in traffic, especially among tourists, is a point considered by the authorities.

So, if your vehicle breaks down in Spain, it’s best to call an official towing service. This way, you avoid fines, dangers, and the stress that an unprofessional towing attempt might bring.

In Spain, it can indeed be a challenge to insure young drivers between 18 and 25 years old. The main reason is that statistically, young drivers are more often involved in accidents. For insurers, this means a higher risk, reflected in significantly higher premiums. Some insurance companies even refuse to insure drivers under 25 or require additional insurance products, such as life insurance in a package, to reduce the risk.

Compared to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are a few differences. While insurance premiums for young drivers are also higher in these countries, there are often more opportunities to reduce them. For instance, special rates or offers, like driver’s training to lower costs, are quite common in Germany. In Switzerland, young drivers can also benefit from good driver programs or family discounts.

In Spain, such flexible models are not yet as widespread. Here, the insurance conditions for young drivers are stricter, and premiums are often uniformly high. However, it’s worth comparing offers, as there are insurers with more attractive conditions – it just requires some patience and good advice.

Ultimately, it’s crucial to be well-informed and perhaps plan long-term. As you get older and gain driving experience, premiums decrease significantly. Until then, it is about finding the best possible solution to drive safely and under fair conditions on Spain’s roads.

  • The damaged traffic participant reports the damage to their car insurance.
  • This insurance then coordinates with the car insurance of the other party involved in the accident and clarifies the question of liability.
  • The injured party then takes their car to a workshop they trust.
  • Their insurer sends an appraiser to this location to determine the extent of the damage with the workshop.

If you’re involved in an accident or have a damage incident in Spain, there are several important steps to follow to resolve the situation smoothly:

  1. Stay calm
  2. Notify the police
  3. Fill out the accident report
  4. Take photos
  5. Inform Iberia Insurance Broker
  6. Repair

More detailed instructions can be found in our article on reporting car accidents in Spain.

Carrying a standard accident report (Declaración Amistosa de Accidente, DAA) is also mandatory. A translation of the individual positions is provided further down.
Both parties enter their information and provide a written statement on the question of liability. This report is signed by both parties and submitted to their respective insurers.

Zurich’s car insurance offers flexible coverage options, where you only pay for what you really need. Key benefits include four levels of coverage starting with the mandatory liability insurance up to 70 million euros, roadside assistance, and basic legal and accident protection. Additional benefits include free choice of garage from over 800 partner workshops and optional extras such as extended legal protection or glass breakage protection that can be added individually.
A possible disadvantage is that optional coverages like theft protection, extended accident insurance, or total loss protection can increase the premiums. Although Zurich offers a great advantage through flexible customizability, the additional price may be seen as a disadvantage for some drivers seeking comprehensive coverage from the base.

The Liberty car insurance offers significant advantages for foreigners in Spain, including full coverage for drivers and passengers, roadside assistance from kilometer zero, and a no-claims discount of up to 65%. In case of total loss, fire, or theft, the vehicle is replaced at new value within the first two years. Additional benefits include legal support for fines, accident insurance, and free choice of workshop.
One downside is that optional additional coverages like vandalism or theft protection can increase premiums. The reduced premiums under the “set drivers” category only apply to certain drivers. While the insurance is particularly beneficial for foreigners in Spain, other insurers might offer more tailored options.
