The advantages of car insurance in Spain

Car insurance in Spain provides legally required liability coverage, flexible additional coverages such as comprehensive and theft protection, and quick assistance in case of a claim, often with 24/7 service – ideal for foreigners in Spain as well.

Mandatory protection and legal compliance

The liability insurance is legally required and protects against financial consequences for damages you cause to others. Without this coverage, you face high fines or the immobilization of the vehicle.

Individual protection through additional insurances

Spanish insurers offer flexible packages, such as partial or comprehensive, theft, or accident protection. You can tailor your policy to your personal needs.

Support in case of claim

Many insurances in Spain provide quick assistance in case of accidents, such as 24/7 roadside service and claims processing, often in your language – particularly advantageous for foreigners in Spain.

Important questions & answers

Frequently asked questions about car insurance:

WHAT does car liability insurance cover in Mallorca and Spain?

The motor liability insurance in Spain not only offers you legally required protection but also the reassurance that you are not alone in difficult moments.

  1. Personal injuries: If you are involved in an accident and someone is injured, your liability insurance covers medical costs, hospital bills, or necessary rehabilitation measures. In a stressful moment, you don’t have to worry about financial burdens.
  2. Property damage: Whether it’s the damaged car of another driver or damage to someone else’s property, the insurance steps in to cover repair or replacement costs, so you don’t have to pay out of pocket.
  3. Legal support: Should legal issues or disputes arise, the insurance stands by you and covers lawyer and court costs, ensuring you are also legally protected and can rely on professional support.
  1. Fire: If your car is damaged or destroyed by fire—whether due to an engine fire or external causes like vandalism—comprehensive insurance covers the damage costs. This is an essential protection especially in areas of Spain prone to hot summers and occasional fires.
  2. Theft: If your vehicle is stolen, comprehensive insurance in Spain helps compensate for the loss. Particularly in tourist areas, where the risk of car theft can be higher, this protection is very reassuring.
  3. Natural damage: Spain can face extreme weather conditions like hail, floods, or storms. These natural hazards are typically covered under Spanish comprehensive insurance, which offers a significant advantage.
  4. Vandalism: Scratched paintwork or smashed windows due to vandalism? Comprehensive insurance protects you from the costs of such damages. It’s an important aspect especially in larger cities or tourist regions.
  1. Accident damage to your own vehicle: Regardless of whether the accident is self-caused or the other driver fled the scene, comprehensive insurance in Spain covers damage to your vehicle, including repair costs or replacement in case of a total loss.
  2. Theft and vandalism: If your car is stolen or damaged through burglary, theft, or intentional vandalism, the insurance steps in. Especially in urban areas or tourist hotspots in Spain, this is a crucial protection.
  3. Damage from natural events: Spanish comprehensive insurance also covers damage from extreme weather conditions such as floods, landslides, hail, or storms, which occur more frequently in certain regions of Spain (like coastal or mountainous areas). This coverage is often included in standard policies, something usually offered as an additional option in Central Europe.
  4. Fire and explosion: If your vehicle is damaged by fire or explosions, the insurance covers repair or replacement costs. In the hotter and drier regions of Spain, where fires are more common, this is important protection.
  5. Glass damage: Damage to windows, such as stone chips or cracks in the windshield, is also covered. This coverage is standard in many Spanish comprehensive insurance policies.
  6. Animal damage: Should an accident occur with an animal—whether on country roads or in rural areas—the damage to your vehicle is also covered.
  7. Optional deductible: In Spain, you can often choose between different models, with or without a deductible (franquicia). A higher deductible reduces the monthly costs, while comprehensive insurance without a deductible is more expensive, but offers the best protection.

In most countries, damages to the injured party’s vehicle are covered by the offending party’s insurer. In Spain, this is regulated differently. The so-called “Convenio” is a framework agreement of all car insurers registered in Spain and stipulates that the injured party is compensated by their own insurance.

In Spain, it’s generally not allowed to tow a vehicle yourself, and there are good reasons related to both safety and traffic regulations.

Unlike in some countries where you can just grab a tow rope and pull a friend’s car to the nearest repair shop, things are stricter in Spain. Self-towing is considered too risky. Traffic regulations specify that towing vehicles can only be carried out by authorized towing services.

Why? One main reason is safety. Unprofessional towing carries the risk that the towing device is not properly attached, or that the towed vehicle is not securely fastened. Abrupt braking or a sharp turn could end in an accident, especially on Spain’s often narrow and winding roads. Professional towing vehicles are equipped with special tools to transport the vehicle safely—something that might be lacking in a DIY attempt.

Another aspect is the traffic order. Traffic in Spain, particularly in cities, can be hectic and chaotic. Self-towing could bring additional risks and severely disrupt traffic flow. The risk of misunderstandings in traffic, especially among tourists, is also a factor considered by authorities.

So if your vehicle breaks down in Spain, it’s better to call an official towing service. This way, you avoid fines, danger, and the stress associated with an unprofessional towing attempt.

In Spain, it can indeed be a challenge to insure young drivers between 18 and 25 years old. The main reason is that young drivers statistically tend to be involved in accidents more frequently. For insurers, this represents a higher risk, reflected in significantly higher premiums. Some insurance companies even refuse to insure drivers under 25 or require additional insurance products like a life insurance package to mitigate the risk.

In comparison to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are a few differences. While in these countries insurance premiums for young drivers are also higher, there are often more options to reduce them. For example, special rates or offers, like driver training to lower costs, are quite common in Germany. In Switzerland, young drivers can also get a bit of a break through good driver programs or family discounts.

In Spain, such flexible models are not yet available to the same extent. Here, insurance conditions for young drivers are stricter and premiums often generally high. However, it’s worth comparing offers, as there are insurers with fairer conditions—it just requires some patience and good advice.

Ultimately, it’s important to be well-informed and possibly plan in the long term. As you get older and gain driving experience, premiums noticeably decrease. Until then, the best possible solution should be found to drive safely and under fair conditions on Spanish roads.

  • The injured party reports the damage to their car insurance.
  • This then coordinates with the other party’s car insurance to determine liability.
  • The injured party then takes their car to a trusted repair shop.
  • The insurer sends an assessor to the shop to evaluate the damage amount with the shop.

If you are involved in an accident or have a damage claim in Spain, there are several important steps you should follow to resolve the situation smoothly:

  1. Stay calm
  2. Inform the police
  3. Fill out an accident report
  4. Take photos
  5. Inform Iberia Insurance Broker
  6. Repair

You can find more detailed instructions in our post about reporting car accidents in Spain.

Carrying a standard accident report (Declaración Amistosa de Accidente, DAA) is also required. A translation of the individual positions can be found below.

The Zurich car insurance offers flexible coverage options, where you only pay for what you really need. Key benefits include four levels of coverage, starting with the mandatory liability insurance up to 70 million euros, roadside assistance, and basic legal and accident protection. Other benefits include a choice of over 800 partner workshops for repairs and optional additional services like extended legal protection or glass breakage protection that can be added individually.
A potential drawback is that optional coverages like theft protection, extended accident insurance, or total loss protection can increase premiums. While Zurich offers a significant advantage through flexible customization, the additional cost may be perceived as a disadvantage for some drivers seeking comprehensive protection from the start.

The Liberty car insurance offers important benefits for foreigners in Spain, including full coverage for drivers and passengers, roadside assistance from kilometer zero, and a no-claim discount of up to 65%. In case of total loss, fire, or theft, the vehicle is replaced at new value within the first two years. Further advantages are legal assistance with fines, an accident insurance policy, and free choice of workshop.
A disadvantage is that optional additional coverages such as vandalism or theft protection can raise premiums. The reduced premiums in the “fixed driver” category only apply to certain drivers. While the insurance is especially advantageous for foreigners in Spain, other insurers might offer more tailored policies.
